To get admission in a top engineering college, it is important to clear a few entrance exams. There are a few common exams, like JEE, for all those aspirants who wish to get enrolled in top colleges like IITs, NITs, and IIITs. However, apart from this, there are many more examinations that students should know before appearing. All these have the same eligibility, where you can apply after passing the 12th board exams.

Check out the list of the top 8 engineering entrance exams:

1. JEE Main (Joint Entrance Examination Main)

For students who wish to get selected for renowned institutes like NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs, JEE Main is the largest engineering entrance exam in India. NTA conducts this exam, and the test is all about speed and accuracy, covering subjects like Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.  For students who do not score well, this exam is held in two sessions, giving them a chance to improve their scores. This entrance is the mandatory qualifying round for JEE Advanced. In order to achieve good marks, students require a thorough knowledge of the NCERT curriculum, as the questions often blend multiple concepts into a single problem.

2. JEE Advanced

Exclusively for the top 250,000 qualifiers of JEE Main, JEE Advanced is the final gateway for getting admission in top-notch institutes like Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). This is a little difficult exam, which not only lays the foundation in theoretical knowledge but also examines how quickly you are in problem-solving and come up with unique ideas. It has two papers that students have to appear for and complete in 3 hours. This exam also has step marking and objective questions. To crack it, you must be well-versed in complex physics and mathematics.

3. BITSAT (Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test)

BITSAT is a common entrance exam for the three BITS campuses: Pilani, Goa, and Hyderabad. Unlike JEE, BITSAT places more focus on speed and English proficiency. The computer-based test includes Logical Reasoning and English Proficiency sections apart from the regular PCM subjects. This exam has a "Bonus Questions" section that allows students who complete the 130 questions early to attempt 12 extra questions, to achieve a better score than others. But there is negative marking too in this exam. BITS competes with the top IITs, paying more attention to time management.

4. SRMJEEE (SRM Joint Engineering Entrance Examination)

If you want to get yourself enrolled in SRM Institute of Science and Technology’s campuses, then the SRMJEEE exam is your gateway. Which is in the Kattankulathur campus. As compared to JEE, this is easier but gives you less time to complete the paper, as students must solve 125 questions in 150 minutes. The questions are usually from Class 11 and 12 standards; hence, students who have a strong grip on their +2 subjects can easily crack this entrance exam. Interestingly, SRM often conducts the exam in multiple phases so that students do not miss out on the opportunity to secure a seat. It is an excellent choice for those who wish to specialize in Aerospace or Genetic Engineering in a private university setting.

5. MET (Manipal Entrance Test)

The Manipal Entrance Test (MET) is to get admission in the renowned Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT). Students can book their slot for the examination and choose their preferred date and time. The questions asked in this entrance exam are Mathematics and Physics, often featuring a mix of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions. Manipal has outstanding research facilities and global tie-ups, a better option for those seeking an international-standard campus experience and great placements, particularly in Computer Science and Data Science.

6. COMEDK UGET

For all 150 private engineering colleges in Karnataka, there is a single entrance test called COMEDK (Consortium of Medical, Engineering, and Dental Colleges of Karnataka). The paper is usually easy, but it has a limited time to complete it. Students can get relief as there is no negative marking, so they have a chance to score better. Since Bangalore is India's tech hub, qualifying through COMEDK offers a strategic advantage for internships and placements in the IT and core engineering sectors that are geographically concentrated in the city.

7. VITEEE (Vellore Institute of Technology Engineering Entrance Examination)

If you wish to clear VIT Vellore, the VITEEE is the entrance exam that you should clear in Chennai, Bhopal, and AP. The exam is distinctive because of its "Equi-percentile Equating" method for result calculation, which balances the difficulty levels across different days and slots. If you want to know what all papers are included, then it has an Aptitude section in addition to PCM and English, testing a student’s overall mental agility. VIT is famous for its "Fully Flexible Credit System" (FFCS), and the entrance exam will give you learning about modern engineering.

8. Amity JEE

Amity JEE is the entrance test for the various campuses of Amity University. It lays emphasis on the fundamental concepts and is designed similarly to JEE Main, but with a time limit of 120-minute duration for 90 questions. There is no negative marking, so even if students are not sure of the answer, they can attempt it. Amity also accepts JEE Main scores for direct admission into several B. Tech specializations, including Artificial Intelligence and Biotechnology. For aspirants who want better infrastructure and campus facilities, this can be a better option that blends traditional engineering with modern industry requirements like IoT and Cloud Computing.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Admission to IITs requires a two-step process: you must first rank among the top 250,000 candidates in JEE Main to become eligible for JEE Advanced. Only your rank in JEE Advanced determines your admission to an IIT.
Difficulty is subjective. JEE Main has more complex questions but more time per question. BITSAT questions are generally easier (closer to NCERT level), but you have significantly less time to solve them. BITSAT also includes English and Logical Reasoning, which JEE Main does not.
No. Most major private universities like VIT (VITEEE), SRM (SRMJEEE), and Manipal (MET) conduct their own independent entrance exams and have separate application portals and fee structures.
Since the core syllabus for most exams is the Class 11 & 12 PCM curriculum, focus on mastering JEE Main fundamentals first. Then, dedicate 2-3 weeks before each specific university exam (like BITSAT or VITEEE) to practice their specific patterns, speed tests, and additional sections like English or Aptitude.
